How we transformed a simple pad into a delivery system for active wellness.
Introduction
For over a century, menstrual pads have done one thing: absorb. They've been designed as passive barriers to catch and contain, nothing more. The materials have improved marginally. The shapes have evolved. But the fundamental concept hasn't changed since disposable pads first entered the market.
AVA Pure Sciences asked a different question: what if a pad could do more than absorb? What if it could actively support the body during menstruation delivering beneficial compounds to tissue that needs them most, exactly when it needs them?
The answer required us to look beyond the feminine care industry entirely. We found it in pharmaceutical science, where micro-encapsulation technology has been delivering active ingredients through controlled release mechanisms for decades. We adapted that technology for menstrual care and the result is a patent-pending innovation that represents the first genuine breakthrough in pad technology in generations.
What Is Micro-encapsulation?
The Basic Science
Micro-encapsulation is a process by which active substances are enclosed within microscopic protective shells typically ranging from 1 to 1000 micrometers in diameter. Think of each capsule as a tiny protective container, shielding its contents from the external environment until specific conditions trigger release.
The technology is well-established in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications, where it solves two fundamental challenges: protecting sensitive compounds from degradation, and controlling precisely when and how those compounds are delivered.
Why It Matters
Micro-encapsulation offers several critical advantages over conventional delivery methods:
Protection from Oxidation: Many beneficial compounds including the omega fatty acids in hemp seed oil are vulnerable to oxidation when exposed to air. Encapsulation creates a barrier that preserves potency until the moment of use.
Controlled Release: Rather than delivering all active ingredients at once, micro-encapsulation enables gradual, sustained release over time. This means benefits that last throughout wear, not just in the first few minutes.
Targeted Activation: Capsules can be engineered to respond to specific triggers heat, moisture, friction, or pH changes. This allows delivery to be activated by the body's own conditions.
Enhanced Stability: Encapsulated ingredients maintain their efficacy during storage, ensuring that the product you use performs as intended regardless of how long it's been on the shelf.
Established Applications
The technology is well-established in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications, where it solves two fundamental challenges: protecting sensitive compounds from degradation, and controlling precisely when and how those compounds are delivered.
Pharmaceuticals: Time-release medications, targeted drug delivery, protection of sensitive active ingredients
What AVA has done is apply this established science to an application that remarkably no one had seriously explored: menstrual care.

The AVA Approach
AVA's patent-pending technology applies micro-encapsulation specifically to feminine hygiene products embedding micro-encapsulated hemp seed oil (Cannabis sativa L.) into the top, body-facing layer of our absorbent pads.
This isn't a surface coating or a fragrance additive. The microcapsules are integrated directly into the fibers of the pad's contact layer, positioned precisely where they can interact with the body's natural conditions during wear.
How It Works: The Release Mechanism
Our microcapsules are engineered to respond to two primary triggers present during normal pad use:
1.Thermal Activation (Body Heat)
The body-facing layer of the pad warms to skin temperature during wear. This gentle heat softens the capsule walls, initiating the release process. The warmer the contact, the more active the release meaning the capsules respond dynamically to actual body contact rather than releasing uniformly regardless of positioning.
2. Mechanical Activation (Friction)
Natural movement walking, sitting, shifting position creates gentle friction against the pad surface. This mechanical pressure ruptures capsule walls, releasing additional hemp seed oil. The result is a delivery system that responds to activity: more movement means more release, providing support precisely when tissues experience the most stress.
3. Moisture Response
Contact with menstrual fluid and natural moisture further activates the capsules, ensuring that the active compounds are delivered to tissues when they're most receptive. This creates a synergistic effect: the very conditions of menstruation trigger the release of compounds designed to support comfort during menstruation.
Sustained Delivery, Not Instant Release
Unlike topical applications that deliver their full payload immediately, our micro-encapsulation provides sustained release throughout the wear period.
Consistent support over 4-6 hours of typical wear
No initial surge followed by diminishing returns
Responsive delivery that adapts to individual wear patterns
Efficient use of active ingredients without waste
Why Hemp Seed Oil?
The Science of Selection
We evaluated numerous botanical oils for our micro-encapsulation platform. Hemp seed oil emerged as the optimal choice based on several converging factors:
Optimal Fatty Acid Profile
Hemp seed oil contains omega-6 (linoleic acid) and omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid) fatty acids in approximately a 3:1 ratio. This specific ratio is significant because it closely matches the ratio considered optimal for human health and is particularly relevant for supporting the body's natural synthesis of prostaglandins compounds that play a crucial role in inflammatory response and pain signaling.
Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA)
Hemp seed oil is one of the few plant sources of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid with documented anti-inflammatory properties. GLA is a precursor to prostaglandin E1 (PGE1), which has been associated with reduced inflammation and pain relief directly relevant to menstrual comfort.
Skin Barrier Support
The fatty acid composition of hemp seed oil closely resembles the lipids naturally present in human skin. This biochemical similarity allows the oil to integrate effectively with the skin barrier, providing deep hydration without disrupting natural function. For the delicate vulvar tissue which is more permeable than skin elsewhere on the body this compatibility is essential.
Antioxidant Content
Hemp seed oil contains significant levels of alpha-tocopherol (Vitamin E), a powerful antioxidant that protects cells from oxidative stress. This provides additional skin-protective benefits while also helping stabilize the oil itself within the microcapsule matrix.
Antimicrobial Properties
Research has demonstrated that hemp seed oil exhibits inhibitory activity against certain microorganisms, including Candida albicans the fungus responsible for yeast infections. This contributes to maintaining healthy microbial balance in the intimate area and naturally supports odor control without synthetic antimicrobials.
Important Clarification: Hemp Seed Oil vs. CBD
Hemp seed oil is not CBD oil. This distinction is important:
Hemp seed oil is extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant. It contains zero THC and zero CBD. Its benefits come from its fatty acid profile, vitamins, and antioxidants.
CBD oil is extracted from the flowers, leaves, and stalks of the hemp plant and contains cannabidiol (CBD), a cannabinoid compound.
Our products use only hemp seed oil completely non-psychoactive, legal in all jurisdictions, and safe for all users.
The Benefits: What This Means for Your Body
Our patent-pending micro-encapsulation technology transforms a passive absorption product into an active wellness delivery system. The documented benefits include:
Anti-Inflammatory Support
The omega fatty acids in hemp seed oil particularly GLA support the body's natural anti-inflammatory processes. During menstruation, when inflammation contributes to discomfort, cramping, and tissue irritation, this targeted delivery of anti-inflammatory compounds can help create a more comfortable experience.
Continuous Skin Nourishment
Conventional pads can cause dryness, irritation, and chafing particularly with extended wear. Our micro-encapsulated hemp seed oil provides sustained hydration to vulvar tissue throughout use. The fatty acids and Vitamin E nourish delicate skin, maintaining its integrity and preventing the discomfort associated with friction and moisture exposure.
pH Balance & Microbial Health
The antimicrobial properties of hemp seed oil help maintain healthy microbial balance in the intimate area. By inhibiting overgrowth of organisms like Candida albicans, our pads support the body's natural defenses against infection while helping maintain optimal vaginal pH.
Natural Odor Control
Menstrual odor is primarily caused by bacterial activity. Rather than masking odor with synthetic fragrances which can cause irritation and disrupt vaginal flora our technology addresses the source. The antimicrobial properties of hemp seed oil naturally reduce the bacterial activity responsible for odor development.
Potential Circulation Support
The anti-thrombotic properties associated with omega fatty acids may support healthy blood flow during menstruation. While more research is needed in this specific application, the potential for reduced clotting and improved circulation represents an exciting area of benefit.
